Rose Hip Season Begins

While this is a site for jewelry- I see a correlation between it & health. Jewelry enhances one's feeling of beauty. It induces confidence. It can be classified as self care!

I have a background in herbalism & would like to draw the 2 elements closer together.
I just returned from the coast where I was delightfully surprised to find that the rose hips were ready for picking!
They are wonderful preventatives for keeping our vitamin C levels up, & I wanted to share a healthy recipe with you.

I would be remiss to not mention ethical harvesting. This is maintained by holding respect for the plant; not taking plants where they are scarce, but abundant. Harvesting towards the bottoms of hills vs the tops (seeds blow downward).
Even asking permission from the plants themselves. Wildcrafting is a beautiful opportunity to get in touch with plant spirit.

With no further ado- the syzurp...

Rose Hip Syrup

1. Forage dark red rose hips ideally after 1st frost.
2. Wash in colander.
3. Remove stems & flower bits.
4. Blend in food processor or blender just long enough to break up into pieces. *Pureeing is unnecessary.
5. Put in water. 1:2 ratio of 1 part water, 2 parts hips.
6. Bring to boil & then simmer (with lid) 15-20 min.
7. Allow the rose hips to continue steeping (with lid on) until the liquid cools down.
8. Double over a layer of cheesecloth & strain pulpy liquid through a couple of times until it's watery. Make sure that the solvent is hair free (rose hips have tiny hairs that can feel itchy).
9. Get some good honey & stir in equal amounts honey to water.
10. Optional* add 1/2 Tablespoon of lemon for preservative & to balance the flavor.

You did it! You now have a syrup that will aide you & yours through the throat aches & sniffles of winter. This will last about 6 months.

May you enjoy this & please let me know how it went & if it turned out delish!
